Two individuals, a Austrian man, 55 and his 53-year-old brother, were detained in June. The older man, a colleague of the Syrian woman, stated to police last week that there had been an accident—but disputed homicide.
Addressing the media earlier, a representative for the state prosecutor said the pair were being kept in custody on "serious suspicion of intentional killing".
The identities of those concerned have been withheld by authorities, in accordance with local legislation.
The family's disappearance was first reported by the female victim's relative, who is based in Germany, on July 25, 2024.
Police said the woman's colleague informed them at the time she had taken an prolonged visit with her daughter to travel to her relatives in the nation of Turkey.
Her bank card was then found to have been used abroad several times.
But when officers searched the mother's apartment, her smartphone was located.
An individual also claimed hearing a commotion in the dwelling, and cries of "mother" on the day the mother and child were believed to have vanished.
A broader criminal probe was launched, with officers finding several texts transmitted via the woman's phone—among them a resignation letter to her employer and messages to the male colleague.
Authorities stated a four-figure sum was also sent to the individual.
Katja Tersch informed media representatives on that day that a rented space had been leased before the vanishing and a freezer had been positioned inside.
The male siblings extracted the freezer from the unit on the date the victims went missing, she said. And a shortly afterward, they obtained an additional appliance.
Investigators believe they believe this points to the fatalities were planned in advance.
"How they died remains unclear due to the advanced decay of the victims," she stated.
The prosecutor's spokesman—from the legal authorities—said the specific order of occurrences is still unclear, but the victims were professionally hidden and not discovered during a prior examination.
Although the brothers were detained in the summer, it was not until 12 November that the elder brother acknowledged an event and to storing the victims. He rejects any plan to cause death, officials said.
In a related development, his younger brother admitted to a attempt to hide evidence but disputed involvement in a killing.

In a joint statement, the nation's official for women's affairs and the top legal representative said the "suspected killing of two... represents the abrupt and violent termination of a mother and child and uncovers a heartless setup".
