Although not quite at the equivalent scale as granting clemency to holiday birds, but the county's top official conducted a ceremonial pardon event this week by ritually sparing the life of a swine named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava performed the seasonal stunt at the Cuban-style Latin Cafe 2000 in the core of Miami’s iconic Little Havana neighborhood.
“This animal is guiltless. She is worthy of this pardon. No offenses are on her docket,” declared Levine Cava in a speech with inescapable allusions to the sheer volume of pardons issued since the beginning of a current administration.
“Unless you count eating six or seven apples per day,” Levine Cava continued. “May this pig enjoy a long and happy life free from concern.”
The event, either celebrating or rejecting the local cultural practice of eating roast pork during the holidays, was created to mirror the yearly bird sparing at the White House.
The animal, provided by a first responder, was named for the modern linguistic fad of young people shouting “six seven” – originating from a musical verse – often seemingly at random. The craze became so widespread that a leading lexicon site recently named “six-seven” its top term for the year.
Six Seven the pig is now set to enjoy its days at a farm sanctuary “far from charcoal and roasting pans”, according to the event’s official press release.
“This swine clemency has become a cherished method to begin the festive period,” said the event host, in a notably cheerful message.
“It captures the character of Miami: happy, multicultural, and grounded in customs that unite the community. Each year, we are delighted to mark tradition and kindness in a way distinctively Miamian.”
Participants enjoyed a meat-free selection of spinach croquetas and cafecito as they marked Six Seven’s big moment.
