In October of last year, the late-night programming block debuted a new season of its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. However, not long after, the network launched a brand-new animated series with a distinctly unique tone. Haha, You Clowns was heartwarming and calm, reminiscent of a cartoon version of a serene talk show. At a time often defined by bleakness, this show's wholesomeness resonated deeply and helped it become a surprise hit.
In mid-December, Adult Swim confirmed a big renewal: Haha, You Clowns has been renewed for a further two seasons. This offers showrunner Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to further explore the story of the Campbell family. The series focuses on three well-mannered teenage brothers whose central trait is their profound affection for their widowed father, with Cappa providing the voices for all four main characters.
"I am incredibly thankful to the viewers of the show who welcomed the series and spread the word," stated Cappa. "It's thrilling that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for seasons to come."
In the same announcement laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "radically heartfelt and strangely uncanny." He specifically highlighted the fans who found the show and advocated for its peculiarly charming appeal.
"All of you supported this new show, championed for it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "As the show says: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was praised as "a gentle counterpart" to other adult animated fare. It offers something deeply soothing about observing this endearing family navigate their simple existence.
In earlier interviews, creator Joe Cappa stated his hope to move the comedy genre beyond its long-running sarcastic tone. He attributed this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.
“There's this level of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” explained Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for too long, and we need to laugh at something different now. The genre needs to change.”
Now, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa has the opportunity to help usher in that change he described. Or at the very least, the renewal guarantees audiences more opportunities to enjoy the heartfelt moments of the unique Campbell clan.
The final episode of Season 1 of Haha, You Clowns is scheduled to air on December 21st. The entire series is available for streaming on HBO Max.
