The Former French President to Pen Jail Diary Documenting Three Weeks Behind Bars

The ex-president of France will soon publish a book this autumn called Notes from a Cell, detailing his experience served in custody.

This news emerged just 11 days following the ex-leader gained freedom while his appeal proceeds the guilty verdict on charges of unlawful coordination in a case to acquire presidential race money provided by the leadership of former Libyan leader.

Prison Experience: Solitary Musings

“Inside jail one sees little, and activities are scarce,” he notes in one passage, indicating the account will focus on his musings during solitary confinement rather than wider commentary regarding the packed and struggling French prison system.

“Silence escapes me, which is missing at the prison, where there is endless commotion,” he states. “The din unfortunately never stops. Yet, similar to barren lands, personal reflection is fortified in prison.”

Release Hearing: Recounting the Hardship

During his plea for freedom, he participated via screen from a room in prison, depicting prison life as exhausting. He stated to the judge: “I wish to commend to all the prison staff, displaying remarkable compassion, and who helped make this ordeal bearable – as it truly is one.”

“It never crossed my mind that in my seventies, I’d be in prison. It’s an ordeal I must endure. It’s challenging, I acknowledge, it’s very hard. It has an impact all who experience it as it’s exhausting.”

Unprecedented Situation

Sarkozy, the ex-head of state from 2007 to 2012, became the inaugural ex-leader from the EU and the first leader since WWII in the French Republic to be incarcerated.

Before entering jail he had said he intended to spend the period for authoring a memoir.

Cell Library

It is not certain whether he had time to review and analyze the three books he took into prison: a biography of Jesus in two parts together with Dumas’s work the classic tale, where a wrongfully accused individual is sentenced to jail later flees to exact retribution.

Life in Confinement

The former leader remained in solitary confinement due to safety concerns in a space approximately nine square meters featuring a personal bathroom at La Santé prison in the city. Guards were stationed in a neighbouring cell.

Sources mentioned his diet consisted solely dairy snacks while inside worried that meals provided might have been spat on. Although he had access to cook for himself but he turned this down, according to reports. Unclear remains if he will detail meals during incarceration.

Lawyer’s Statements

Sarkozy’s lawyer, who visited his client each day during the incarceration, informed the court security would be better out of prison than inside. “He has faced threats against his life, has heard screaming during nighttime and the urgent intervention in a neighbouring cell as a detainee harmed themselves.”

Case Background

He entered custody on 21 October after a French court imposed five years in prison for illegal collaboration over a scheme to secure campaign funds during his election campaign.

He disputes the charges challenging the decision, and another court case is scheduled for next spring.
