The co-creator of Call of Duty, the mind behind the wildly popular video game Call of Duty, has tragically died in a car accident in the state of California at the age of 55.

Zampella's death was verified by Electronic Arts, which owns Respawn Entertainment, a game studio which he helped establish.

The influential industry figure passed away following his car crashed and caught fire on a motorway in LA on Sunday, US media outlets report.

"This represents a devastating loss, and we stand with his family and friends, those closest to him, and the countless individuals inspired by his creative vision," a representative from Electronic Arts commented.
