A whistleblower has revealed a parliamentary probe that the UK abandoned confidential technology enabling the militant group to track down local individuals that had served with international military.
Person A, called Person A, explained that Afghans affected by the data leak were advised to change residences and switch their phone numbers to protect themselves from militant forces.
Lawmakers are currently examining the UK government's management of a serious disclosure of personal details affecting nearly 19,000 Afghans who had applied to relocate to Britain to escape the regime.
A data file containing private information, such as identities, contact details and occasionally relative details, was accidentally leaked by a staff member working at special operations center in last year.
The incident became known only in August 2023, when details of multiple applicants who had applied to relocate to Britain were posted on social media.
Many believe there's a false assumption that the Taliban lack the same sort of facilities that we have,” the whistleblower testified to lawmakers.

When questioned about whether the Taliban owned sophisticated technology, the source confirmed: “They possess all resources.”
Early investigations provided to the investigation indicated that at least 49 kin and associates of Afghans affected by the leak had been executed.
A gag order concerning the leak was implemented in late 2023 and blocked relevant facts regarding the matter from media reporting until mid-2025.
Due to legal constraints, the whistleblower and the non-governmental organization associated with advised individuals at risk they were assisting that they had “concerns that certain devices had been intercepted”.
“Our suggestion was that they moved if they could and switched their phone numbers. Those were the two main details that, if the Taliban had access to this information, would lead to identification and capture,” she said.
The whistleblower contested that government assessment performed by a former official had been wrong to conclude that the obtaining of the records by the regime was “minimally impact an individual's existing exposure”.
“The thing to remember is that these Afghans are not standing up to militant forces; they are in hiding. All concerns relate to past work history.”
Person A described terrible abuse endured by concerned people, including electric shock torture, simulated drowning, and physical abuse.
“We have had four-year-old children who have had bones crushed to try to get relatives to reveal locations,” Person A stated.
