NY Unveils Portal for Citizens to Submit Immigration Videos Following Detentions of Four US Citizens

New York state AG has launched a new digital platform encouraging locals to submit images and footage of federal immigration enforcement across the state. This step follows a day after a major enforcement action rattled NYC's Chinatown, triggering widespread protests.

US Citizens Held During Enforcement Action

A lawmaker announced during a news conference that four American citizens were arrested and detained for "almost a full day" following the previous day's operation. Protests erupted in the city on both Tuesday and Wednesday.

"Every New Yorker is entitled to reside free from terror," the attorney general declared in a release.

"For those who saw and captured ICE activity during the raid, I encourage you to provide that evidence with my office. We are committed to reviewing these reports and evaluating any legal breaches."

Submission Process

The platform includes options to send photos and videos of the incident, plus a field to indicate location information. Prior to sending, users must mark a option that states that "authorities may use any evidence provided in a legal proceeding, including in a lawsuit or government document."

Details of the ICE Action

The Manhattan operation, which observers say included more than 50 federal agents, happened in a popular neighborhood of NYC where imitation products and merchandise are commonly traded en masse – often to tourists.

Recordings of the incident show numerous covered and weaponized officers securing and holding a person, and forcing aside onlookers. Throngs of locals pursued the officers down the sidewalks. An armored truck was observed traveling down the urban roads.

Leadership Statements

During a news conference held with the New York immigrant rights coalition, Representative Goldman, a Democrat, said that four American citizens were arrested by immigration for almost a full day and that there were "no circumstances where US citizens should be detained for no reason." He said the persons were let go on the following day with no legal action taken.

"There's a clear purpose here. It is not about removing offenders," the congressman said. "This represents a militarized effort to create conflict. It is merely a pretext to generate turmoil for federal officials to bring in the military to stop unrest that they themselves caused."

Broad Criticism

Anger over the ICE raid rapidly grew – all three NYC mayor hopefuls denounced the operation, including NY's governor.

"Yet again, the current administration opts for oppressive displays that create fear, instead of protection. It must stop," a contender declared.

NYC community groups voiced concern too.

"Immigration agents targeted the neighborhood with tactical trucks, hooded officers and protective equipment to go after local sellers working to survive. This raid had no connection to public safety and focused completely on frightening communities and areas," remarked the head of a rights organization.

ICE Policies

ICE policy bans the holding of citizens and the organization has stated it refrains from apprehend citizens. Nevertheless, independent reporting has revealed that over 170 citizens have been held against their will by immigration authorities during the period of the existing leadership.

Ongoing Trend

Immigration operations have been rising in frequency in NY and nationwide this year.

A recent action in the city center was the initial documented operation on an immigrant shelter of the current administration. Rallies targeting ICE are commonplace as are claims of violence and cruel conditions.

Recently, a letter submitted by legal entities claimed inadequate care of expectant mothers in ICE facilities.
