New Year Celebrants Urged to Dress Warmly with Snow Predicted Across the UK

Weather experts have indicated a chilly start to the new year, with wintry precipitation anticipated throughout a lot of the UK. Celebrants are being urged to bundle up as bitterly cold temperatures are expected for New Year's Eve.

Celebratory Events Proceed Amid Forecasts

The Scottish capital's famous Hogmanay events are planned to take place, following last year's calling-off. This proceeds amid advisories for snow in northern Scotland.

"A cold New Year's Eve night for those partying, so additional clothing will be necessary," said the national forecaster.

Celebrations Under Open but Frosty Skies

Elsewhere in the UK, the weather is likely to be perfect for fireworks celebrations, with dry conditions and clear skies. Temperatures are expected to be cold, so extra layers vital, as per forecasters.

To the north, skies will be more overcast, but this is unlikely to impact visibility for watching fireworks. "We are not looking at low cloud, mist or murk, so you ought to be able to see fireworks, just not stars," added one forecaster.

Extensive Weather Alerts for Friday

Moving into Friday, advisories have been issued across Northern Ireland and extending from Wales, through the north-west, the West Midlands and reaching London and the majority of the south-east of England.

Temperatures Forecast to Fall Even More

As 2026 begins, it will be "chilly no matter where you are," said forecaster Simon Partridge. The weather are forecast to drop further as snow and gale-force winds are likely to hit the north of the country.

About 10cm of snow is expected to have settled in some areas by Friday morning, reaching up to 30cm on the most elevated routes and peaks.

Public Health Advisories Released

Meanwhile, amber-level health advisories have been issued for the north-east and north-west of England. These are due to stay active until noon on 5 January, with temperatures likely to fall to between 3C and 5C.

Officials explained this indicated the weather was expected to trigger significant impacts across the NHS and care systems. This involves a potential rise in the fatality numbers among vulnerable individuals or those aged 65 or over.
