England’s men’s team will commence their UEFA Euro 2028 adventure at the the home of Manchester City, assuming they achieve the expected passage for a tournament taking place in the majority of the UK and the Irish Republic.
The Etihad Stadium has not staged an England men’s fixture since eight years ago, when the visitors were defeated 2-1 in a friendly, but is highly likely to stage the England side for their first match on June 10, 2028.
The English side are set to play their concluding group fixtures at Wembley, but, should they win the preliminary round, their last-16 tie would take place at the Newcastle stadium. Placing second would mean beginning the playoffs at the Hill Dickinson Stadium.
The championship was launched at an ceremony in Piccadilly Circus on Wednesday night. Senior figures from the tournament organizers and the host FAs were confronted as they entered the site by approximately 50 pro-Palestine demonstrators, who called for Israel’s national side to be expelled from the sport because of the situation in Gaza.
Signs were held up with phrases reading “Show Israel the red card” and “You are complicit”, while protesters called out: “Kick Israel out.”
The inaugural fixture of Euro 2028 will be played at the Cardiff’s stadium in Cardiff, on Friday 9 June, a match that will involve Wales if they make it.
The national stadium will host both semi-finals and the championship match, which will be played on a Sunday in July 2028 with a commencement at 5pm.
It is anticipated that an afternoon start, which will also be used for European club finals from the following campaign, will attract households and help reach a wider spectrum of viewers.
The Republic of Ireland are scheduled to play their opening match at the Dublin Arena and the Scottish team would play similarly at Glasgow’s Hampden Park.
All four host countries’ teams will participate in the qualification process; two reserved places will be reserved for any that miss out on Euro 2028 through the qualification path.
Aston Villa’s stadium and Spurs’ ground round out the nine host stadiums. Each one will hold at least one knockout match, with the quarter-finals held at every host’s main arena.
The draw for the qualifiers will be held in Belfast, which was dropped as a venue city last year when it emerged Casement Park could not be redeveloped in time, on a date in late 2026.
“It will be a tournament for the fans and a celebration of everything we value about the game – its emotion and capacity to bring people together.”
