U.S. actor and playwright Jeremy O Harris, renowned for the award-contending production Slave Play, was taken into custody last month at an airport in Japan on suspicion of trying to bring in illegal drugs into the country, authorities announced.
Harris, 36, was intercepted on 16 November at Naha airport, located on Okinawa, after a border inspection agent discovered 0.78 grams of a crystal material laced with the synthetic narcotic MDMA in his tote bag, as stated by a customs spokesperson.
He was promptly taken into custody on suspicion of breaching Japan’s strict Narcotics and Psychotropics Control Act.
Regional customs officials lodged a formal complaint with the prosecutor’s office to initiate formal charging proceedings against the individual.
A law enforcement representative in Tomigusuku, Okinawa, verified that Harris is still being held. The official did not elaborate on whether Harris has admitted to the allegations.
Presently, it is not known whether the artist has retained legal representation in Japan. Requests for comment to his representatives were not immediately returned.
Reports indicate Harris had arrived in Okinawa for tourism, journeying from Britain with a layover in Taiwan. Okinawa is a frequent tourist spot to the southwest of Tokyo, famous for its coastlines and military installations.
Japan enforces some of the toughest narcotics regulations among industrialized countries. Having or trafficking even minute quantities of banned drugs typically leads to criminal prosecution.
International visitors detained by Japan for suspected drug offences in recent years include former Australian rugby league player Blake Ferguson in 2021. In a famous 1980 case, ex-Beatles member Paul McCartney was detained after arriving in Tokyo with marijuana and was afterwards barred from the country for years.
Beyond his stage writing, Jeremy O Harris is also known for his acting role in the series Emily in Paris and for producing the HBO drama Euphoria.
