California's Governor Acknowledges He Is Evaluating a 2028 Presidential Run

The California governor, a prominent Democratic figure, has disclosed that he intends to make a decision about whether to launch a presidential campaign in 2028 following the 2026 midterm elections wrap up.

"Yes, I couldn't be truthful if I said no," Newsom commented when pressed about seriously considering a presidential run following the 2026 midterms. "I'd just be lying. And I can't do that."

The governor's current term as California's leader wraps up in the start of 2027, and he cannot run again. But, he cautioned that any determination is a long way off.

"Fate will determine that," he added.

Increased Visibility as a Political Adversary

Newsom has come to the forefront as a notable adversary of the former president's team, employing his digital presence and pushing a proposition that would increase Democratic representation in Congress in as a counter to Republican redistricting efforts. This action has drawn criticism from political opponents.

Clash on Transportation

The former president's secretary of transportation, Sean Duffy, alleged that the governor is indifferent about Californians in a Sunday segment on Fox News. Duffy revealed a strategy to pull federal funds from California and threatened suspending the power to grant commercial driver's licenses.

"I intend to cut $160m from California," he declared, in the wake of a recently reported tragic collision in California involving an unauthorized trucker that caused loss of life and casualties.

The governor's team pointed out that the national authorities had approved the driver's employment on several occasions, which allowed him to secure a CDL under U.S. law.

The transportation secretary had before stated he was holding back $40m from the state for ignoring English language requirements for CDL holders.

Firm Rebuttal from the Team

"Former D-list reality star, now transportation chief, continues to misunderstand federal law," Newsom's office responded in a recent statement countering the funding warnings. "Meanwhile, unlike this clown, we focus on reality: California CDL holders had a death rate significantly lower than the U.S. average. The state of Texas – the only state with a larger number of CDL holders – has a rate markedly elevated than California. Statistics are clear. The federal leadership misleads."

Voter Sentiment and Campaign Considerations

A recently conducted survey revealed that nearly three-quarters of Democratic voters and almost half of voters indicated that the governor ought to campaign for the White House in 2028. After the current administration began, public support for the governor has increased to an mean of a third from approximately 30%, while his disapproval has dropped from an mean of over 40% to 38.4%.

Earlier this year, Newsom commented while visiting several battleground states that he had "uncertainty" about his future for the next presidential election.

He also referenced his past difficulties, including being found to have a learning disability at the early childhood.

"The idea that a individual who scored 960 on the SAT, who continues to find reading challenging, who was typically not at the front – the idea that you would even throw that out is, in and of itself, remarkable," he commented. "No one can say? I await who steps forward in the next election and who answers the call. And that is the issue for the voters."
