Antony Price, the visionary UK-based designer responsible for some of the most iconic looks favored by artists from David Bowie to Roxy Music and even royalty like Queen Camilla, has died at 80 years old.

Price was best known for his architectural shapes and dramatic aesthetics, such as the light-hued ensembles that featured in the pop-rock group Duran Duran's landmark music video for "Rio".

"They honored him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance across their platforms."

This news arrives less than a month after he debuted his most recent collection in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. Singer Lily Allen walked in a dress inspired by the famous black velvet "dress" once worn by Princess Diana.

A Pioneering Career

A native of Yorkshire, born in 1945, Price headed for London in the early 1960s to attend the prestigious Royal College of Art.

Upon completing his studies, he commenced his career designing menswear at Stirling Copper and was responsible for the body-hugging, buttoned trousers that rock legend Mick Jagger famously wore during the iconic group's Gimme Shelter tour in 1969.

He launched his own brand in 1979 and presented his inaugural collection a year later. The show was launched by outfits on supermodel Jerry Hall, who also wore the bridal gown Price designed for her for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.

Collaborations with Icons

A long-time collaborator of the late David Bowie, Price designed the distinctive jacket the star wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His trademark skill to blend tailoring for all genders along with his technical proficiency in crafting form-fitting garments made him a "true original," in the words of the UK's fashion authority.

By the 1990s, he started creating outfits for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, which included various looks for her tour of the United States after assuming the title.

With a vocation that covered half a century, Price held his ultimate fashion presentation in London last month in partnership with the design house 16Arlington.

  • Architectural Forms: A hallmark of his work.
  • Theatrical Flair: Shaping the look of rock and pop.
  • Gender-Fluid Fashion: Merging menswear with womenswear.
  • Working with Stars and Royalty: Including music legends and the future Queen Consort.

The fashion world laments the passing to a true visionary whose influence on fashion and music remains profoundly felt.
