A extensive search and recovery effort is currently in progress in the Caribbean waters for two unlocated sailing vessels loaded with relief goods en route from Mexico to the island of Cuba.
Authorities in Mexico has sent naval assets and reconnaissance aircraft to search for the Friendship and Tigger Moth, which were had on board at least 9 personnel, per a military release.
The vessels had been projected to arrive in Havana on either Tuesday or Wednesday, but there has been a complete lack of contact from them and zero verification of their docking, the navy said.
The island nation has relied heavily on Mexico's over recent weeks, as the island grapples with multiple national electricity failures.
"Both crews and captains are experienced sailors, and each boat are fitted with suitable safety systems and emergency beacons," a representative involved in the effort said.
The nine-person crew are from Poland, France, Cuba and the US. Officials said it has established contact with maritime rescue coordination centres from the involved countries along with their diplomatic representatives.
"The group is co-operating fully with the relevant authorities and remain confident in the crews' ability to safely arrive in Havana," the official further stated.
Previously that week, the government in Havana publicly celebrated and warmly received another boat that had delivered 14 tons of donated goods to the country.
That boat, nicknamed "a new Granma" after the boat in which Castro landed in Cuba to begin the armed struggle in the 1950s, carried solar panels, medicines, infant formula, bicycles and food.
Volunteers and NGOs have been at the forefront of efforts to bring humanitarian aid to Cuba starting at the turn of the year, a period which saw a oil sanctions on the island nation was initiated.
Global bodies have since raised alarms about ""critical" supply shortages, with in excess of fifty thousand surgeries postponed in Cuba because of energy rationing.
Diplomatic tensions have been ramped up over the past months, with comments from different leaders underscoring the complex state of bilateral relations.
In response to previous comments, a senior government figure insisted that "the political system of Cuba is non-negotiable."
Accounts suggest that early stages of discussions commenced, although their ongoing development remains not publicly known.
The maritime authorities said it was dedicated to using all of the resources at its reach to discover the sailboats and guarantee the security of the sailors.
At this time, there has been silence on the missing boats by the Cuban leadership.
